Making a routine

I firmly believe that a strong warmup routine is essential for growth as a musician. There are so many concepts and skills that are covered during this highly important part of the practice routine. Here are my warmups for both bass clarinet and soprano clarinet (yes, both A and B-flat) based primarily on the warmups of Robert Spring.

Soprano clarinet

  • Long tones

  • Major and melodic minor scales

  • Major and melodic minor thirds

  • Langenus, Book 3, Single tongue warmup, page 22

  • Double tonguing exercises

Bass clarinet

  • Long tones

  • Major and natural minor scales

  • Major and melodic minor thirds

  • Endurance with scales, J & S Gardner 2021

  • Slap tonguing exercises

  • (Bass) Clarinet technique, Stephan Vermeersch
